So last winter the S2000 battery started to get a bit weak, so I bought a replacement. I put the old battery next to the mostly dead Miata battery that is no longer available from Mazda. Notice anything? Direct fit except for the vent connections. So if anyone needs a replacement battery for an NA Miata, get an S2000 battery.
Image
And since I can't get my racing battery to take a charge at all, in goes the S2000 battery.
So lesson learned, don't leave a racing battery off of a charger all winter.

First event summary.
RS-3s are terrible in the cold.
Need to bump up the launch control speed for new tires. Lots of wheel hop.
Need to learn the limits of the new tires and learn to drive the car again.
Dirt makes tires slippery.

I have chargers, just weren't hooked up cause I'm stupid.
I should have the clutch line, just have to find it in the mess.

So I made this to plug the hole from the missing cam position sensor.

So this came in...

The front springs aren't quite long enough at full droop for where I want the front ride height to be.

Been casually shopping for a used trunk lid so I don't have to drill more holes in the current one and they seem pricey from the wrecker yards that I can search online. Like as much as a fiberglass one.
So if anyone has seen a local wrecker with an NA Miata that I can get the trunk lid off of, let me know.

It's a value for money thing. :) A used junk yard Miata trunk lid shouldn't be over $200+ shipping.

Drove the car to work today. And now my parking space is covered in coolant. My parking lot diagnosis is that the lower rad hose ended up rubbing on the turbo oil drain line and has finally rubbed through. I'd like to think I'd have noticed this when I did the engine swap.
I hope I kept the old hoses for a quick repair, or I may have to break my "not racing the S2K at Castrol" rule.
I hate working on the coolant system. Messy.

you miss all sorts of things during engine swaps. like bolts that keep fluid in the engine.

Thought that the larger hose would have been worn through by the flex steel hose. Wasn't the case.

Small black cap with the clamp on it failed. Probably too close to the exhaust manifold and aged the rubber quicker.

Ordered some silicone caps and I'll add some heat shielding to prolong it's life.

Pulling carpet...

Removal of soft top... and roll bar set in so I can measure for cutting

Getting there, lining up the bolts took a bit of work.
Image

Painted the cut out areas.

Evening 2 done... Still have to drill holes and install the backing plates. And install the removed stuff that I have to put back in. Hopefully done tonight. Yes the S2000 is still dirty from the tow home before Christmas. :P

It might be the location and tilt of the seats relative to each other. But yep they do look different heights.

Rear leg backing plate under the car.

Rear leg bolted in and new place for ABS sensor to pass through body.

Holes drilled for front leg mounting.

Bolted in

Backing plate for front leg.

This is taking longer than I thought it would, ~9 hours so far over 3 evenings, but I'm on the reassembly phase now.
And the soft top is not going back in due to inherited backdate/update rules from Street Prepared. :D

Probably...

Interior going back in. Need to trim panels and carpet around the roll bar.
Image

Notice the huge gap between the bar and trim piece. Measure once, cut once, get it wrong.

From above

Seat is in a good position. My head is a couple of inches below the "broomstick test".
Image

Passenger side trim came out much better.

Padding installed and final shot.

Figured it would happen sooner or later...
At the end of my third run at event #8 the car started making bad noises coming into the stop box. Right now I think the transmission has eaten itself.
Got the car home this morning from Castrol. Couldn't get back out there last night due to needing to spend an hour finding a key for the trailer hitch. :x

And I really need to get some sort of removable winch on the trailer for these situations. Had to use ratchet straps to pull the car onto the trailer.

Crap, thought you were doing it after work. Sorry I didn't help push it onto the trailer. Even if it is just a turbo miata that's more than a 1 person thing.

So, what's the "equivalent transmissions solution" to how much extra engine power you've added? Is the 6MT stronger?

i'll chime in on this, yes. but gearing is lame... its the reason that the MSM and the non-turbo miatas are both in E Street.

The gearing is extremely lame, 2nd would top out at ~89kph but third would go to 123kph with the rear ratio and tire diameter I have. Might not totally suck with the extra power. But the spare 5 speed is in the garage so that's what is going back in.

And so it starts...
I use two of these to get the front off the ground high enough to get the jack under the front end. They make moving a car in the garage very quick, highly recommended.
Image

Jack up the rear
Image

I stopped taking pics for most of the disassembly, but couple hours later this is needed.
Image

It's out and definitely broken, make lots of noises when I rocked it back and forth. And I can only spin the input shaft 3/4 of a turn before it locks up.
Image

Need to swap over the shifter and a couple of switches to the "new" transmission, clean it up and it'll be going back in.

And I really need a 2 post lift in my garage, I'd even settle for a QuickJack.

Tranny troubles

Postby leftme » Thu Aug 18, 2016 7:08 am

"New" transmission is in the car. And I re-did the butt connector that got damaged the first time I put the transmission in last night.
I didn't find the transmission jack to be of much use, but the Miata transmission is light enough to be lifted into place.
I also need to pickup transmission fluid. Duh.

And I think I'm going to start looking for a 6 speed to have on hand when this 5 speed breaks. I'll just use 2nd and 3rd gear on the 6 speed like its 1st and 2nd on the 5 speed. The long term plan is to get this engine to ~2L and up the boost. :D

Went to lapping on Aug 21st, car was flawless except for the trans whine. And I haven't done lapping in many, many, many years.
Brakes make a light show when hot, as Jim captured.
Didn't notice much brake fade and neither the tires nor engine overheated.
Timed the last session with TrackAddict app and the phone's internal GPS. Car seemed fairly quick, probably faster in the hands of someone who knows the track better.

Didn't seem to tear up the tires too much and didn't go through as much fuel as I thought it would, so I'll probably try to do more lapping next year.

Got a phone call from Tirerack yesterday. The tires I have on order is arriving at their warehouse Thursday and so I should have them by the end of next week.
Looking forward to 245 goodness.
I may also have to get more aggressive with the fender rolling.
