Good luck at the Rally-X!

Your car now needs a large Canadian flag painted on the roof.

Red is usually pretty hard to match since the old panels will have faded in the sun, especially on 80s cars.

"Sorta Red" is good enough for the dirt.

Thanks! (It went pretty well...)

Er....no.

Ya, once it gets dirty, has some tree branches hanging off it...won't even notice.

Well, today's rallycross went really good. It was hot, dusty and took forever to get rolling, but ultimately a blast.

Car performed well, with the exception of the oil light thinking it was a strobe at a disco. I thought I had it beat when I put in half a liter of Lucas Oil Stabilizer, which just thickens the oil and makes it "stick" to the bearings a little longer. Light had been out for a week with no issues.

I guess the oil just got hot enough to thin out again under the duress of competition. Once it had cooled a bit, no light. Drove home no problem, happy as a half million kilometer clam.

I understand this is just a band aid solution at best, but hey, if it holds out for a bit longer before I have to swap the "I" motor in...bonus.

At any rate, some vids from today. Sound is crap because it's so rough and the bushings in the rear subframe are...what's the word I'm searching for....uh...right...gone.

We have completed step 3 of 4 in the "Jesus Christ get it through your head, it's not a rally car!!" rally car.

Big, largely unnecessary lights!

Image20160818_200200 by lyall4, on Flickr

Although in fairness to the "unnecessary" part, we are planning on doing the Loop TSD rally in late September. The Loop is run over night from 7pm to 7am by way of Rocky Mountain house. It gets mighty dark round those parts at night with lots of big unpleasant rocks and stuff in the roads. If you've ever been to the outlying roads that way, you know I use the term "roads" with a grain of salt.

Also, during the rallycross we kept getting pelted with handfulls of rust every big bump. It was falling from the head liner so I thought I'd better take a look. The sunroof was seized closed since we got her, so I remedied that, and found this....

Image20160814_151953 by lyall4, on Flickr

The inside of the sunroof panel is absoulutely rotten! After half an hour of beating it with a dead blow hammer and sucking up the rust with a shop vac it's mostly free of loose rust. Bit of cleaning and grease and it now has a perfectly functioning sunroof. I think large hail would probably penetrate it at this point for lack of remaining metal, but that's splitting hairs. It works.

Super minor update.

As the cigarette lighter never worked and the radio is locked and I don't know the code, I decided to kill two birds with one chinese replacement part.

It has two usb ports for phones, ipods and what not, measures voltage ( a must with big lights, if your alternator is croaking, you want to know asap obviously.) and a cigarette lighter port for other charging with a plug in thingy.....

I don't need to know how they made it and shipped it to my door for 15 bucks. I'll probably sleep better that way.

One more item in preperation for the "Loop". I'm starting to become a little hesitant and not quite as reved up as I was initially. It starts in Nanton, finishes in Cochrane and then we have to drive home. That's 4 hrs there, 12 hrs of over night rallying and 4 hours back. I figure up for 26 hours sounds about right.

I don't remember why I'm going.

I think all the top Chinese factories have installed suicide nets by now, so conscience == clear.

Fifteen bucks for something from China is practically a luxury product.

Well it's been awhile...mind you the only update to the car of late has been going out to scrape the bright red "abandoned vehicle" sticker off it every couple weeks...Until now!

We did the "Loop Rally" several months back. Cliff notes: Stupid rough, rocky roads. Fatigue of biblical proportions. The car survived save breaking a hanger and dragging the exhaust system over said rocks for several km's. It was "fun"...I guess....

Image20160928_163726 by lyall4, on Flickr

The much less "God, when will it end..." Trail of the Gnu rally a couple weeks back was a riot. Just an excellent, muddy, snowy, deer-ee good time.

We trailered the car out as luck favors the prepared.

Ready to go!

Image20170401_103219 by lyall4, on Flickr

The roads were just epic. Every condition you could hope for. And to state the incredibly obvious, engine in front and driven by the rear wheels as God intended was the way to go....

We spent a vast majority of the rally sideways and laughing/frightened.

The car was incredible, not so much in performance, but in the sense of it went though hell and never skipped a beat. We turned over 499,000 km at some point during the rally. Mind boggling how this just keeps going.

Image20170401_161922 by lyall4, on Flickr

I have to say, this was bar none the most fun I've had at a TSD rally, and I've done a few over the years.

Image20170401_190237 by lyall4, on Flickr

I believe we finished 5th out of 13 teams overall...not that it mattered. My face hurt from smiling and laughing and screaming "DEER!" Do yourself a favor, find a crappy rwd car and schedule this in for 2018!
